Subject: Re: Lending Institutions

Friends, Chris Stafford here,

I'm just gotten a request from a Pullman, WA, USA person wanting
information about
prior experience getting loans for straw bale residences. He is
particularly interested in a construction loan.

This would be good information for many straw balers. I will compile a
list of lending institutions for both straw bale construction loans and
mortgages and get it out to everyone if you will send me what
information you have. A couple of my clients have mortgages for their
houses that I will add to the list.

Here is a list of information that will be helpful to describe the
project.

Owner's name
Project location
Name, Address, telephone no. of lending institution
Type of construction; post and beam, load bearing, hybrid
Size of residence
Owner built or Contractor built.
Construction Loan and/ or Mortgage
Exterior wall finish material
Roofing material

Insured, By whom

Thanks in advance for your information,

Chris Stafford

Hello dear Chris, and other GSBNers..

Judy Knox here, in response to Chris's request for mortgage lenders for
straw-bale.
I'm forwarding an earlier e-mail from DCAT, which has developed the most
wonderful web site (special thanks to DCAT Board member Tim Spears for
his extensive work on this). I'd suggest reading below, and making note
to check out the site. And we'll look forward to others additions to
this resource base....maybe make sure to direct additions to both the
GSBN and to DCAT.

Stay cool everybody....and joyful

Judy

Forwarded message from DCAT
As a part of our work on Institutional Barriers to Straw Bale
Construction, we held meetings and/or interviewed by telephone local
professionals who had experience with straw bale structures in their area

of expertise, or who were interested in becoming involved. The following

people have volunteered to answer questions on their experiences with
insuring, appraising and financing straw bale structures. They are
willing to be listed as follows on the DCAT barriers web site
(www.azstarnet.com/~dcat/barriers.htm), which will be linked to the City
of Tucson Community Services Dept. web site (www.ci.tucson.az.us/~csd).

Anybody have any objections to David Bainbridge hanging out with us? He
said that he'd like to. That would round out the full gaggle of authors
of The Straw Bale House book, too. I'll add him Monday night unless I
hear otherwise.

Chris Stafford - you may have already heard from Joyce Coppinger, who is
working with Sallie Hamilton to compile a similar list of insurers and
lenders. If not, she's at <<jc10508@...> and Sallie's at
<<sallie13@...>

Pertinent to the question is this short article which will be running in
the next TLS:

Addressing Institutional Barriers to Straw Bale Construction

The Development Center for Appropriate Technology has a new website
offering a wide range of information aimed at helping people overcome the
institutional barriers to straw bale construction. The site includes a
history (with a number of articles from back issues of TLS), the modern
experience, a large collection of excellent photos, building codes,
techniques, specific information on dealing with the different barriers,
lots of resources, links, and opportunities to both find and share
information about insurance, lenders, appraisers, building officials,
government agencies, and specific projects and buildings.

The site was created with funding from a technology transfer grant to the
City of Tucson from the Urban Consortium Energy Task Force, part of
Public Technologies, Inc, using funding from the U.S. Department of
Energy. This was a follow-up grant to the award-winning City of Tucson
Affordable Straw Bale House Project, in which Habitat for Humanity Tucson
and the Tucson Urban League each built a straw bale house on city-owned
land.

Though there is a lot of information on the site, we need a great deal
more, coming from people everywhere with experiences and information to
share. This site will grow and serve as a clearinghouse for information
on addressing these barriers for some time into the future. The more
information we can gather and put on the site, the more useful it will be
in overcoming the barriers. Please have a look and tell us about your
lenders, insurers, appraisers, building officials, and buildings. By
sharing our information, we can help each other deal with the obstacles
that often prevent or hinder us from achieving our dreams.

This is what I've come up with for the GSBN blurb for the next TLS; it's
very short, but then there's not much space to put it in, and not a whole
lot to tell yet:

The Global Straw Building Network, a worldwide networking and
information-sharing tool for connecting regional organizations and
certain essential individuals promoting and utilizing straw-building
techniques, continues to gather strength. The initial effort, an
email-based list, is for the time being lightly-trafficked and
under-utilized during the western hemisphere's building season, but
growing: ten countries are represented by approximately two dozen
parties. For more information, see TLS #21, p 34, or contact
<<GSBN@ lists.greenbuilder.org>
