Dear friends,

Right now we finished plan of construction Zero-Energy Straw-Bale House in
Minsk, as a part of National Program of SB housing in Belarus, inspirited by
Belarussian Division of International Academy of Ecology (some details on
www.un.minsk.by/iae). Project was officially adopted by State experts and will
be finished in 1999. SB technology is very useful in NIS, and we spread SB
technology in Belarus (with help of ISAR (11000$), Ken Williams, Louie Saletan
(USA), see "Niet problem" in Last Straw), and other states.
This year 40 SB (112m2) houses with Solar collectors (5m2) were finished by
state building firms in Belarus, and near 10 private SB houses were finished
by SB activists.
We work with mass-media: #5 magazine "Architects and constructions of Russia"
totally is about SB and Permaculture, 3 times we "were on air" with program
about SB technology on "Radio of Russia" and get near 5000 letters from
Russia, some TV activities too, etc. Next year we plan to build up near 200 SB
houses in Belarus.
We get bad news from Mongolia, and bad information -UNDP stopped SB
activities. It's bad news, but SB housing in Belarus is very successful
without outside help - it's good news.

All the Best,
Evgeny Shirokov

Hi,
Someone in the UK is intending to look into zero energy housing, and would
like to include strawbale buildings.
Does anyone know of any zero energy use straw buildings? They can be anywhere
and it would be good if you had a contact for them, or knew if it might be
possible to visit.
It would be great to get strawbale buildings included in this project and
research, so any help is very welcome.
Best wishes

Dear Evgeny,

Judy Knox and Matts Myhrman here from Tucson, Arizona, just wanting to
tell you that your e-mail made our day...nyet, our week...nyet, our
entire month!!

This is, for us, an inspiring example of how straw-bale technology can
spread through the existing networks of other countries and cultures.
We congratulate the foresight of Louie Salatan, Kendall Williams and
Solar Energy who oversaw the translation of Build It With Bales into
Russian and then, with you, worked through all the glitches of the first
successful straw-bale project. Most of all, we send our congratulations
and admiration to you and all your straw-bale activist colleagues who
have done all the wonderful work since then.

We hope you will keep us informed of the many things you are all learning
about straw-bale construction in the Belarussian climate and culture
(both what works best and what doen't work).

We send you our warmest greetings!

Judy Knox and Matts Myhrman
