John Glassford here again

I have had a phone call form a Chris Piper from Surfers Paradise near
Brisbane. Chris is with The Rudolph Steiner Schools and wants to build
a straw bale school near Surfers. Chris is having trouble with the Gold
Coast City Council for approval. The Council wants to know how straw
bale performs from the point of view of spread of smoke, spread of flame
and ignitability.

I have a copy of both the video and the paper on the fire tests done in
New Mexico, but I could not see any results for spread of flame and
spread of smoke. Ignitabilty I presume would be the time it takes to
burn through as straw when in the bale form does not ignite but
smolders. Can anyone help Chris with any information, I do not have
email for Chris so I will pass any messages on to him.

Also if anyone on the list knows of any Rudolph Steiner buildings built
from straw bale Chris would appreciate contacts.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards John Glassford

Hello from Holland,
Last week I've had a lovely lecture at the "Vrije School" in Lier near
Antwerp in Belgium. Mark Depreeuw an inspired architect, designed a
beautiful building and would like to construct the interieur walls with
strawbales. Parents and kids are invited to join the wallraising.
If anything works out well, the event will take place around Eastern 99.
Tom Woolley (email address removed)and Barbara Jones ask for
specifics at (email address removed)would be persons to relate to on details
on a sb-project at a Steiner School in Ireland.
Luck with the officials,
Martin

Hi John,

As far as I know, the tests you ask about have not been done. (Bruce King-
is there any appropriate info from Cassandra Adams' fire testing at
UCBerkeley?) Meanwhile, I would suggest that if Chris Piper's Council
could see the video, it might still be persuasive, as the performance
speaks for itself.

A Steiner-inspired Waldorf school has been built in Carbondale, CO-- the
builder is Jeff Dickinson <biospace@...> and his wife Pricilla works
there. (There's a photo & paragraph about it in TLS #23, pg.19)

best regards,
Catherine Wanek
