Subject: copyright

 Hi all,

I have a question regarding copyright to those of you with publishing
experience.

I'm working on 4 projects (Slide show presentation, website, CDrom and a
French book, all SB) and they will all include pictures of the SB houses we
visited. And the pictures might be used for unknown purposes later on.

I need to know more about where I stand 'in case off ...'
Someone advised me the best way to protect myself is to have written proof
that the owners are OK with us publishing pictures of their house. I'm sure
this is the safest way, but so is building a bunker.

How have you dealt with that? What does a publisher ask for? Is the image mine

to use anyway I like just because I took it? Do I HAVE to mention the owner,
architect and builder? I don't mind giving credit where credit is due, and I
want to respect the owners feelings, but I want to know what I HAVE to do, and
what not, so I won't. get into trouble later on.

Bye, Andre

Just ask each ofthe owners to give you permission to publish photographs you
or they have taken of their building. You might want to consult your
publishing company to get the proper wording and get the answers to the
questions you're asking - they do this type of thing all of the time. There
may be different requirements for CD-Rom and for web page, so check this out
with the appropriate organizations, server, company who does this type of
work, too.

Don't have the answers for Andre, though I am interested in
knowing what they are. If anybody replies offlist, please copy me.

Along those lines, there was a German book (I think it was German)
that came out a couple years ago - I saw somebody's copy at one of the
international meetings - and it contained a number of photos of mine,
uncredited, which the author evidently had taken off the web. I'm not upset
- - but I've always wondered how I might get a copy of that book... and
better yet, if the authors might send me a free one in a goodwill gesture
of thanks for the use of the pictures. Anybody know who these folks are and
how to reach them?

Hi Joyce,

I'd check it with our publisher,.... if only I had one ;-)
If any of you have an example, it would be appreciated.

We prefer to publish the book (to be) ourselves until it is mature enough to
go hunting for a real publisher. And the French market might be too small for
a publisher to be interested in publishing our SB book.
The website is simply 'put on the web', by yours truly, and the publishing of
our CDrom will be done by us too. I'd be really surprised if a publisher would
sell our CDrom, including the copyright notice that allows anyone to copy and
sell our CDrom.

I understand that having written permission would be the safest bet, but if
possible I'd like to know the 'rules' of this game. What is allowed, and what
is not. (I realize you might respond 'go to law school for 6 years')

Greetings,
Andre

Well, I really wasn't any help at all - should have asked more questions
before replying, huh? OK, I'm not going to suggest you go to law school -
try searching the Internet. I found lots of information about US Copyright
Law and interpretations. Suppose there is similar information for
International copyright law.

Joyce
