Hi Bill et al,

Bill Steen wrote
> Which makes we ask, who has a list of the members?

This is a list of GSBN members with their websites and email.
I admit, I did not add the people that joined us lately. But are happy to do
so if they give me their info.

Happy to hear that the Steens are comming with a calander. Seems that
whatever I want to do, they have done it first.

Bye,
Andre

Subject: MIPS ecoaccounting for materials

GSBNers

"Eco" Schmidt-Bleek and the Wuppertal Institute in Germany have done
a great job of developing material intensity per service data (MIPS).
This is the ecological rucksack or footprint of materials. Worth
knowing - and a place where clay/straw, straw bale, earth and
straw/mud really shine.

Can someone spare the time to do a careful MIPS for these?

From these we can see that the LEED ratings are perhaps inappropriate
in calling a green building a platinum building....

Cheers

d

Here is a sample

Material Intensity per Service (MIPS), the Wuppertal Institute, Germany
Without considering transport impacts
		Tons/ton Tons/ton
	Tons/ton kwh/ton
Material Abiotic matl	Air pollution Water Energy

Platinum 320,000 13,800 193,000
	2,6370,000
Copper 500 0.7 260 3,000
Aluminum 85.4 9.8 1,378 16,000
PVC 17.3 117.7 0.7 1,153
Steel 7.0 1,295 44.6 441
Fiber glass 10.8 2007 296.3 4,538
Portland cement	3.2 0.2 21.3 253
Linoleum 2.0 2.0 6.7 4
Pine wood 0.9 0.1 10 113

Like all ecobalance metrics the range is very wide, it could be very
efficient processing with minimal ecological cost (Germany) or very
poor processing with very high ecological costs (China).
