Re algaes and straw:

Could it simply be, that the reason for why straw causes algae to disappear in over-algaed ponds is, that the amount of nitrogen in the pond - which is probably big due to the algae-problem - goes down as nitrogen is being used as energy-supply to break down the thrown-in straw ?
