On L¾s¿, (northeasternmost Danish island, famous for its seaweed roofs) a cold chamber of the same sort as Lorenzo is describing was torn down in the late 1980'ies.
It consisted of bricks insulatet with ¸ a meter of seaweed grass.
The building was used for decades to store ice through spring and summer to be able to cool down fish while transporting them to Copenhagen where they would be sold.

They used ice from the lakes, as freshwater melts at higher temperatures than saltwater.
