First, let me remind you all that there IS an archive of this list, and it
is available on Yahoo. There are instructions in every monthly Help file
you get (and you'll get again in about three days, so please read it this
time). Feel free to pass that info on to Trevor or anyone else. Somewhere
in the archives you'll find our discussion about the whole topic, and our
intent to not hide behind closed doors. I think everyone here realizes that
what is discussed here can have implications through much of the SB world,
and the original structure of the list itself was intended to transmit that
information to (and from) the greater straw building world.

Second, with a little technical knowhow it should be possible to use a
search engine or similar tool to capture the content of the SB-R-Us list
from Yahoo (or any other publicly archived list, for that matter). In fact,
a year or so into SB-R-Us's existence this same question came up about
losing important content. I ran my private search engine on it, and it did
an OK job (still needed a little tweaking). Then if I remember correctly
Yahoo extended their limits and the immediate need went away. Should it
become needed, I've also archived every post ever sent to the SB-R-Us and
virtually all the Crest/REPP list's posts in my own email boxes, and that
could be extracted and made available.

Duncan, I'm not familiar with Dublin core meta tags, please give me some
background offlist. Perhaps we could work in the directions you mentioned.
FYI and off the record, I've been strongly considering changing our
Sourcebook (<a target="_blank" href="http://sustainablesources.com/sourcebook/";>http://sustainablesources.com/sourcebook/</a>) into a Wiki, so that the
burden of keeping up with the latest information could be spread to many
others. Perhaps the Strawbale chapter there could become much deeper and
wider through the mechanism that you speak of.

BTW, if there is anything in the archives which anyone would like to
NOT be public, let me know. I'd have to remove the entire post i
believe; I don't think I can edit the contents of the post.

Duncan,

You are making a lot of sense here. especially the bit on RSS
aggregation. What it does need though is someone or even a group of
people (like GSBN) doing some judiciuos editing.

I have always thought that the email lists contain a lot of very useful
information that in many cases gets lost because it is very hard for
the novice to distill state of the art SB information out of the flood.
The free for all email discussions are so valuable because they are a
form of peer review. These discussions though are very confusing for
the novice because it is very difficult to place the discussions into
context.

In the beginning I used to save bits of emails and digests with what I
found very useful information. Due to many changes in e-mail programs
since then I have stopped doing this. I think if a few people simply
flagged these gems as they come and placed them in a central resource,
given the right tags or a good search engine, would make this a very
good resource.

Put otherwise my current insight into SB is based 60-70% email
discussions (I am not on sb-r-us) the rest is own experience,
workshops, TLS and books.

Hi,

As for the European SB list: If my memory serves my right, it was started
(after
the Redfield gathering in 2001) for European SB networking. Other lists were
suggested for technical discussions and testing/building codes (but never
really took off).

I suggest that the European lists comes back to European SB networking and
that
the SB-R-us lists handles the technical stuff. But how to achieve this?

Andre,

I think your suggestion might be that the "European lists comes back to
European SB networking" and that the technical discussions occur on GSBN
(rather than SB-r-us) as they have for many years. SB-r-us is an open forum
and usually contains general questions and some technical conversations, but
perhaps not in the same depth and same intent as GSBN.

There was discussion at ISBBC in Denmark about a separate list for
discussion of European codes and testing, but it seems this has either been
done through GSBN or through email exchanges between individuals involved in
the actual creation of European codes or testing that's being done in
Europe. I think perhaps Rene and Dirk and a few others were involved in
this. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this. Perhaps they can share
more information with you and with the rest of us on the GSBN list.

Hi Andre

your memory is almost correct, it was started after the Euro gathering at the
Redfield Community in 2000 by Simon Blackbourn
originally on the Dutch Squat net server before Jenik started hosting it on
amper.ped.muni.cz server
I remember it well as it was my first SB gathering and a huge inspiration to
me, and I seem to remember you recording much of it?

G 'day GSBN List

The discussion is at least taking place re the lists and the number of lists
on straw bale building etc.

However my main argument is that the performance of the lists and their
ability to distribute information is what I was on about.

The adage that a picture tells a 1000 words is never more true than in this
industry where I earn 100% of my income and not only that I get 100% of my
income via the Internet and my web site.

What I am saying is that all the lists including this one do not have the
variety and flexibility of the Yahoo lists. Especially for ham fisted
computer operators such as myself.

If we are fair dinkum about sharing our knowledge then it should be for
everyone interested in straw bale building new novices especially as well as
old hands.

We are still a drop in the ocean numbers wise in the building industry and I
for one would like to see ONE list encompassing everyone around the world so
called experts and new enquiries. The SB r-us list has that ability to get
the information out there with the best of facilities.

Got to go.

Kind regards
The Straw Wolf

I think Bob Bolles sent a message to GSBN saying that CASBA was going to
check their own list and see who else they wanted to nominate to GSBN.

I don't think it was a decision, which would make it an oversight --
one that I emphatically propose be corrected. I nominate to the Global
Straw Building Network:

Janet Johnston Armstrong janet@...
Turko Semmes turko@...
Greg MacMillan greg@...

Greg and Turko, the legendary Straw Dogs, essentially founded CASBA.
Janet has kept it lively.

Seconds?

by these three, I second their nomination...

Ok, I'll send out the invitations.

Anyone else missing from the ranks?
