Subject: PROPOSAL: electronic bulletin

I'm making this look a bit formal as I want to gauge peoples real
opinion on it. Please say yes or no if you have an opinion, I'd rather
people say 'no' if they can't see the point of it or wouldn't bother
sending things to it. It would save me some time and it's never good
starting something which turns out to be a waste of energy.

== What is it? ==
An email sent out once a month (fortnight/week depending on interest and
volume). The email contains whatever supporters would like other SB'ers
to know about.

== Why do it? ==
Not everyone wants to spend ages reading discussions on several lists,
but some of them would still quite like to know what is going on in SB
world.

The other reason is that much can be gained from some overarching
projects. The Last Straw is the main journal of the SB world, this would
be like the electronic noticeboard of the SB world.

== How would it work? ==
In short:
1. anyone, subscribed or not, sends their notices to the list.
2. once a month the editor(s) forms the notices into one email and this
is sent out to anyone subscribed.

Technically it would be an email list, functionally it is a one way
announcement list sent out to anyone who is subscribed to the list.
There would be no discussions on the list (except between editors). The
editor(s) would clean up what they've been sent and send it out as a
bulletin. Anyone especially interested in what is being sent to the
editors for 'consideration' (almost everything would go through) could
take a look at the public archive of 'submissions'.

== When does this happen? ==
I suggest this list give it a yes/no by the 14th March. If the answer is
yes, we ask for comment from all the lists we know of, and I'll take it
from there.

Duncan

Hi,

I'd say Yes. And perhaps someone would want to take on being the "digester"
for some of the lists, like natural building or crest, to clip interesting
threads or notices and put them in the bulletin.

Martin seems to be saying both yes, and that he will help get the
initial word out - thanks Martin, not quite ready to start yet - the
first one needs to be useful and informative!

Martin has also sent me one of two initial texts I have.

As an aside to answer a question Joyce brought up. Joyce is right in
saying that it would be prudent to find a way to make clear to those
submitting them, that notices made via this email can be used by anyone
in any medium. That gives The Last Straw easy access to using any
notices which this bulletin picks up which they don't otherwise get word
of.

Hello Duncan --

I vote (an emphatic) yes.

Thanks for your proposal, and your willingness to set up the
electronic bulletin board
This does seem like something that would serve the entire natural
building community.
There are three announcements that I can think of right now -- which
I will email to you off list.

An aside about Yahoo - it may be irrelevant and perhaps erroneous,
but I have read that Yahoo cooperated with the Chinese government to
help them track down (via their Internet connection) three dissidents
who are now in prison. Although they also provide a good service to
many, this news makes me less interested in supporting Yahoo.

very best regards,
Catherine Wanek

G 'day Duncan

We have a bulletin or Bread Basket as we call it for ROTI see:

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.roti.org/news/";>http://www.roti.org/news/</a>

(Roti is Indian bread but then you knew that.)

The bulletin has an editor and is a good Rotary resource for me but probably
a lot of work for someone and it has a good archive.

Duncan,

I think this is an excellent idea. I would very much look forward to
receiving it and can also foresee contributing to it on occasion. I
like the idea of a public archive of submissions, so that even if there
was something that was redundant or deemed to be not of sufficient
wider importance by the editors, it would still be available online for
people to find. Thanks for taking the initiative.
