Dear SB brothers and sisters,

Edita visit us last winter, and I hope, SB housing will have great future in
Lithuania.
Nothing new with "official resistance": it's normal reaction from burecracy
any kind - state, construction, sometimes UN-GEF (last year our $4000000 SB
project with Belarus state co-finance 50/50 was rejected by new "GEF climate
officials" on last stage with resume:"We don't intrested in this project").

My visit in Moscow last week was intresting: we participate in Russian
National competition "House of Future for Russia" with our new SB houses? was
elected as finalists, and get best estimation from experts, but get only
second prize: top construction official told us:" If we say, that future
housing of Russia will be SB, President will deside -we all are crazy". But SB
"show must go on" - our SB projects rize up this year in 6 regions of Russia -
Krasnodar, Volgograd, Uhta, Moscow, Omsk, Novosibirsk. We get a lot of
resistance from construction business and local governments, but SB houses
will be finished and officially adopted this year in Russia.

Subject: SB codes resource

Dear members and specifically Martin Hammer,

Based on the question coming form Lithuania. It might be a good idea to
set up a net resource for all specific SB building codes and or
procedures in the various countries.

Basically what I am thinking of is a list of countries with further
subdivisions where necessary for counties etc. This should help a great
deal in making clear what the official status is regarding the
acceptance of straw bale building.

Besides the code or url to the code it should contain a description of
the status of the code the governing body when accepted etc. If at all
possible links to official sites should be given.

I am not sure where to place the resource yet. If needed I could
support it on www.strobouw.nl given a completely separate page.

Kind regards
Rene Dalmeijer

Evgeny,

My I congratulate you on your very good work. I am sure all of us on
this list are aware and some lucky ones maybe a little less, what
struggles you have had to overcome to get as far as you are now.

Generally we have to fight two battles:

Officials who are resistent to change. Education and informing works
wonders often making partners of them in the long run.

A bigger problem is overcoming the vested interests of corporations.

In many countries we now have building codes which are decidedly
unsupportive to the use of sustainable building materials. When
carefully examined some of the codes are prescriptive to the use of
highly engineered proprietary building materials basically defending
the vested interests of the building industry.

The challenge ahead is to now raise awareness at boardroom level in
these industries, that resistance to the acceptance to more sustainable
materials will damage their long term interests. We are not fighting
the corporations we are fighting a lack of awareness. Therefore all
projects and endeavours like your projects Evgeny that have and create
exposure are very useful in promoting sustainable building methods. The
crazy idea of building SB houses being a very good one. Though we all
must make sure what we build are good and inspiring ones.

Great idea Ren#233#.

Bruce's book did this in some sort with the big list at the end of the
book. But things change (rapidly) and a web page that can be updated
regularly would be great.

Rene, Marty and GSBN members,

The Last Straw journal published Marty's list of information about strawbale
codes worldwide in TLS issue #54/ and this will be included on the next
update of the resource guide TLS web site www.thelaststraw.org and in print
format sometime this summer.

We can easily update the web site chart whenever there is new information to
post and then publish it periodically in TLS. I would be willing to give
this information a full page on the TLS web site with links to other sites
that pertain to codes, when appropriate.

Would be good to have all the information in one central location and
linked.

Joyce,

The TLS site and the resource list are both excellent places. This
leads me to the following suggestion. How about adding a summary, per
country of houses presently registerred on The strawbale registry
adding a few relavant statistics while saying this I ask you all to
please add any houses you have been involved with either by entering
the information yourself of prompting either the builder owner to do
so. I will do so myself as I see only one Dutch SB house registerred
whilst there are at least 30 most probably even more, I am now getting
into the happy fase that I learn about projects after they have been
built.
